What makes a balloon fly high? It is the gas inside of the balloon that helps it soar. You could purchase one of these expensive balloons, worth thousands of rupees, but it is never going to fly high until and unless you pump it up with gas. Using the same analogy, we can infer that the Word of God is the gas that will automatically help us soar like eagles, when we put it on the inside of us. Nevertheless, the question that remains to be answered is: “What kind of importance do we give to the understanding and finally the implementing of this everlasting Word of God, in our personal and practical lives today?”
Though Jesus was the “logos” “the Word of God”, He still gave primary importance to the Word of God, for He spent His entire life meditating on the Word of God, when He was on the earth. If Jesus spent the greatest amount of time with the Word, then how much more do we need to spend time with the Word of God? All the men of God have had a Word from God, Moses had a Word from God and so did Joshua. Gideon, too, had a Word from God and so did Elijah. Elisha had a Word from God and so did David. They all had a Word from God; all the men of God have had a Word from God. This is a common characteristic of being a man or a woman of God: that you give the greatest priority to the Word of God.
There is a wonderful story in the Bible from Luke 10:38-42, which illustrates the need to focus on God’s Word, even in the midst of chaos. When Jesus entered the house of Mary, Martha and Lazarus at Bethany, Martha was soon busy with the formalities, that go with being a host. However, Mary chose to sit at the feet of Jesus, to hear His Word. Martha took offence at having to work alone, and complained to Jesus that He didn’t care about her needs and that He should ask Mary to help her. Jesus then replied, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the better part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
Here, we can see that the sisters are completely different from each other, especially in terms of their attitude towards God. One is sitting at the feet of Jesus but the other is busy working; one is listening to Jesus while the other is complaining to Jesus. Martha is a picture of neglect, neglecting the Word of God and being concerned about her own world, while Mary is a picture of one caring for God’s Word and neglecting her own world. However Martha projected a woman who is too busy in life but that is not true because She was preparing food for Jesus, we also notice in John 11 that its because of Martha's faith Jesus did the MIracle of Raising Lazarus from the died and that time Mary was in sorrow, doubt, questions in her mind. However in this particular incident, we see, Incidentally, Martha was busy cooking, and cooking as we all know is not at all bad, especially cooking for others. I don’t think Jesus left their house without food that day; He must have had a delicious supper with Mary, Martha and Lazarus. Despite this, Jesus said, “Mary has chosen the better part”, and not just that, He also categorically made this phrase, “but one thing is needful”. We notice that the word “but” is a conjunction here, and by saying “but”, Jesus didn’t minimize the work of Martha, He was making a far bigger point of Mary’s choice of action. He was talking about priorities: first things first; pretty much in the same way that Jesus had told Nicodemus that he must be born-again. Jesus emphasized the importance, that ONE THING is needful, even though there may be many things that matter to us. What is that ONE THING? Sitting at the feet of Jesus hearing His Word, THAT is needful!
